[His fingers curl into hers as he feels her grip, his eyes darting to their closed hands before looking back up and seeing that grin leveled at him. Don't blush-- be cool, Scott!! Right, what did she just ask him? Toppings, yeah. Weird ones.]
Uh, putting Oreos or Cheetos in sandwiches is gross. They obviously belong on the side, not in the actual sandwich. [Some teenagers do crap like that, but he has some standards here!! Scott also quickens his pace just slightly, so that he's walking by her side, but he doesn't let go of her hand.]
[More out of curiosity than any real desire to prove that it's a real thing that can be done. Her fingers tighten just a bit around his before loosening to something more comfortable as he pulls level with her, giving him another smile. Does it look a little weird that they're holding hands in town? Maybe, but things like that aren't her problem. If it makes Scott uncomfortable, he can pull away first.]
Oooh, wait, you probably don't have yakisoba-pan in America either, right? Like, a long bun with fried noodles in it?
Definitely depends on the chip. I'll give it a pass if you put Lays potato chips in a sandwich, but some chips aren't meant to be in-between two slices of bread with the meat and cheese. It's like, an offense to sandwiches everywhere.
[He's definitely not letting go of her hand, mostly because he doesn't want to. Feeling uncomfortable is the furthest emotion that he has right now, evident by the relaxed smile that's on him.]
Yakisoba? Nope, can't say I've tried anything like that. Is it like putting those instant noodles on a bun?? [SORRY... KOTONE......]
[She laughs outright at his assessment. Wow, so many rules for sandwiches that she's never going to bother following! But it's funny to hear Scott go on about it. And then a protesting,] Noooo! [through renewed laughter as she turns them down the road leading to the club building itself.]
Soba is like... a different kind of noodle, and it's-- okay, once I find a good recipe for yakisoba, I'll make it for you.
[Shinji would probably have one. Maybe she can find his recipe book. While her smile doesn't falter, it does fall away a bit from her eyes, a little more fixed than natural at that thought. Shinji could make it even without a book, huh...?]
--Or at least I can look for soba noodles to fry, [she continues after a beat, forcing her smile just that little bit brighter.] That'd be way easier than trying to make the noodles from scratch myself.
[Even as he guesses incorrectly about yakisoba, Scott finds himself laughing alongside with her, nearly forgetting all the stress that's been building up since the whole desert thing. Being around Kotone always helps with that feeling and he hopes that she feels similarly.
But the path is becoming clearer and huh, so they're going to the club building...? Oh, right, there's a cooking club there, so there's probably ingredients and stuff Kotone is planning to use. All of that makes sense.]
Sure, I'd love to try them. I have a completely open mind when it comes to food. [Except when it comes to judging sandwich toppings.] I'd offer to cook some... American food in return, but uh, TV dinners and sandwiches is where my expertise ends at.
[She can't help but giggle again, because wasn't he just going on about sandwich toppings...? Classic Scott. He really is just so refreshingly normal compared to a lot of the other people she's spent time with, both back home and here in Aldrip. Even if his eyes could obliterate her in an instant, it's a good reminder that yeah, they can still be normal together in spite of it all.
Squeezing his hand as if to get his attention, she grins up at him, a little more genuinely.] I could teach you how to cook! I mean, I'm not a professional. [Nor is she Shinji.] But I had to cook for myself a lot, so I can show you some of the easy stuff.
[He acknowledges with that same cocky grin, but as he feels the brief squeeze of his hand with Kotone grinning up at him, it softens into a smile. Honestly, he's not like super invested in learning how to cook, but it's probably a useful skill to learn. Not to mention, he'll be able to spend more time with her and that's sort of motivation on its own.
Shinji actually volunteered to help him with cooking before he disappeared, or most likely at least, but Scott's still not sure if he should bring that up yet. Maybe once they're eating a fruit sandwich together...]
I guess it couldn't hurt. I'd probably save on money here if I bought ingredients instead of eating out all the time. [Plus doing less work for the locals and everything. More time to just sulk in his room when he wants to.] Although, am I going to learn to cook more Japanese food than American food? I'm going to be a total traitor to my country.
We have burgers and pizza in Japan, too! Did you have a Wild Duck Burger in your town? The tennis club and I would go there after practice sometimes.
[She swings their hands a little absently back and forth, thinking about it with a fond smile. Sure, the "work experience" she'd done there hadn't been super fun, but it was kind of cool to see how it all worked! Besides, it had been fun going there with Rio to talk about how hopeless she was with boys. Rio, that is, not Kotone.
Also like, burgers and pizza is all you need for American food, right?]
Man, if you have hamburgers and pizza, America has nothing to offer.
[Scott jokes lightly, letting his hand swing with hers as he smiles at her. Of course, there's more to the Great American Culture than just hamburgers and pizza, but they are sort of the first two things that pop in Scott's mind when it comes to food. Guess hot dogs too.]
Never heard of Wild Duck Burger. McDonald's and Burger King are the common chains around malls and everything. I'm guessing they didn't expand their takeover to across the seas yet? [He feels like it will happen at some point.]
But I'm okay, money wise. Haven't gone hungry yet, you know? [So, he's doing great!!]
I've never been to one of those, anyway! [At least she always laughs at his jokes, a little snort of laughter. That's probably a good thing, considering she'll never get the chance to visit. It isn't even something she'd even considered doing before, but it's kind of upsetting to think that she won't be able to.
So she won't think about it!]
I'd ask if you wanted to work at Dazai-san's bar with me and Akira, but you don't seem like the kind of guy who'd like being a waiter or a bartender.
[Scott just doesn't have "customer service" written on his face, after all, but maybe she's wrong! She finally does let go of his hand, but it's only so she can bounce a few steps ahead to get the door for him to lead the way into the club building.]
What's that supposed to mean? Can't picture me in that getup or being unable to serve customers without wanting to blow up their order in the process?
[He laughs even as she pulls away, attempting to give her a look through his shades and failing miserably. It doesn't bother him, however, and Scott just continues to follow along, stepping inside the building and making his way over to cooking club.]
Never thought I'd actually set foot in the corridors of cooking club.
[Another laugh, this one tinged with genuine amusement as she glances behind her to give him a grin and a wink.]
I can picture you in it, but sometimes I wanna blow up their orders when they're too complicated!
[The true bartender is Akira. She's more of the "service with a smile" type herself. Anyway, she pushes the doors open and gestures him into the kitchen. As promised, there's a square loaf of bread sitting on one of the counters (with a little note nearby that says Eat Me! ♥), but everything else has been neatly put away, ready for the next culinary adventure.]
You caught me! I'm here to recruit you. [With another beaming smile, she gestures toward the bread on her way to the fridge.] Have you ever made whipped cream from scratch before?
[Guess it's only fair that he joins one of her clubs after he sort of pulled her into his. Well, it's not like he had to force her or anything, because Kotone is The Club Person, but whatever, schematics. He's here, standing in the kitchen, and waiting for the unofficial induction process.
He resists the urge to shove his hands in his pockets, because he knows that he'll be needing them to cook soon. Honestly, this is far more advanced than he imagined. He thought they just... made eggs and pancakes or something, not whipped cream and bread. It's honestly pretty impressive.]
How'd you feel if I told you that the only thing I've ever made before is TV dinners and sandwiches? [Scott doesn't feel all that much shame for admitting that. He's just a totally busy kid! Uh, going to the mall and ditching school and being mad at the world.]
[She sticks her tongue out at him at being called devious with another smile, then tugs open the fridge to pull out a bottle of cream.]
Everybody has to start somewhere! I ate a lot of convenience store food when I was younger, too, but eventually I started wanting to do something new and make stuff for myself. Sweets, mostly.
[She sets the jar on the counter beside him and skips over to a cabinet, pointing it out for him.] This is where we keep the dry goods. Flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, you know...
[And she grabs a bag of sugar and a little brown bottle of vanilla extract, dumping them all on the counter beside him. Her wide, mischievous smile fades into something smaller and more genuine as she glances up at him to meet his eyes.]
I don't do a lot of really complicated stuff, but... it's nice to make something with your hands that you can share with someone.
Edited (you ever look back at a tag and just realize you forgot words) 2023-08-09 10:13 (UTC)
[Scott nods along, as if he knows when to use flour or baking soda when it comes to cooking. Sugar and salt are easy enough, but some of that other stuff is 'yeah, heard of that, but don't know how to use it or what it does.' Guess that's why he's here and at cooking club with her.
Sure is a lot though.
He lifts a single eyebrow as the counter next to him is piled with more and more ingredients. Geez, it feels like he's going into a battle here and he's being given all his weapons for the upcoming fight. He just needs an apron and a chef's hat at this point. Scott's about ready to make such a remark, but as Kotone's smirk settles into something smaller, he feels the words clench up in his throat.]
Oh uh, yeah, for sure, and that other person is like super grateful that she--they made something for him. [...] Them.
Also it's on the ground floor, so it's a fall of maybe a meter. Sorry buddy. She can't help but laugh as he stumbles over his words, the tiniest hint of a flush rising to her cheeks because it's funny that he can't come right out and just say that he likes the things she gives him. Ah- right. Delicate like a baby duck. Boys are just funny like that, aren't they?]
Yeah. [And she winks at him as she turns on her heel and grabs the last few weapons for their coming battle -- a measuring cup and spoons, a whisk, and a bowl. Then she holds up her fingers, one, three, and then one again.]
One cup cream, three tablespoons sugar, one teaspoon vanilla! Then it's just using your muscles with the whisk!
[Good, a meter, then he can make an easy escape in case he embarrasses himself further. It feels impossible at this point, but apparently, the sky's the limit when he's involved!!
But as Kotone lays out the last of the equipment, Scott focuses back on the bowl in front of him. There's no escaping or running away now, because the true battle is about to begin. Somehow, fighting infected almost seems easier-- okay not at all, but still!
Scott listens to her instructions and maybe surprisingly or not, he follows them quite well, adding the appropriate amount of each ingredient before grabbing the whisk and mixing it finely with his hand. Of course, this is just simple following directions, and he's honestly probably taking this a little too seriously, if by judging the serious look of concentration on his face, but he's certainly doing it.]
[At least she thinks he's cute and not embarrassing, that's... something... surely...
While he's whisking, she leaves him to it, slicing four thick slices of bread for their respective sandwiches and pulling out an assortment of softer fruits from the fridge to start slicing up as well for their sandwiches. With trade restored, there's a lot more to choose from! Strawberries, oranges, and kiwis seem like the best fit, and she hums a quiet little tune to herself as she works. Every now and then, she glances over at him to make sure that he's doing okay -- the concentration on his face is kind of endearing, honestly, and makes her smile again as she sets her finished fruit beside the bowl.]
It's easy! If you wanted to make it look like the ones at the conbini, you could arrange them really carefully, but since it's just us, pick out which fruit slices you want on your sandwich, put whipped cream on both sides of the bread, and then-
[She smushes her hands together. Ta-da! Without losing her smile.]
The whipped cream looks really good. I always get tired when I'm whisking.
[It's not hard to give small glances over at Kotone as she slices the fruits because really, he's just mixing a bowl and that's not hard. Honestly, he barely feels himself whisking when much of his focus is on her, with thoughts of the conversation he had with Dazai unfortunately making themselves known. He said he needed time and maybe Kotone does too, especially if she just lost a friend. Seems kind of a bad moment to bring up 'hey would you want to date??' if she just lost someone important to her.
But they're definitely still present and shit--]
I could be your new whisk master.
[Wow, that was super lame, and even Scott knows it, but it's the first response that popped in his distracted mind not related to dating. Right, focus on the task at hand, which is making fruit sandwiches. That's simple and easy and he can do that. Scott stares intently at the fruit now, as if they can be his saving grace.]
Okay, strawberries and oranges are definitely good, can't really say I've had kiwis a lot... [Look, he has to try a sample, especially if he's thinking about putting them on his sandwich. Even if all the other ingredients are good, it can be ruined by one rogue item-- fruit.
So, he snatches a one of the thin slices and tosses it in his mouth, chewing thoughtfully.] Hey, this is pretty good.
[She snorts, then laughs in spite of herself, covering her mouth with her hand to stifle the giggles. It's not even that funny, but it just sounds so silly when he says it that she can't help but laugh.]
Sure, I'll call you next time I want to make a sponge cake!
[She bumps his shoulder companionably with her own, grinning all the while as she starts arranging her own sandwich into what she hopes will be a cute pattern. Let's see, if she lines it up along a diagonal... wait-]
Huh, really? [Without waiting for an answer, she snatches another kiwi slice and just swipes it through the whipped cream in the bowl, holding it up for him to take.] Here, try it like this!
[Laughter is truly infectious, isn't it? Scott finds himself chuckling alongside Kotone, thoughts of looking stupid and uncool far from his mind now. It's just... easy being himself around her. And hey, he likes a good sponge cake, they're like Twinkies, but even better. Not to mention spending more time with her--
His smile back is wide, and as she offers the kiwi lopped with whipped cream, he grabs it and plops it in his mouth.]
Oh yeah, this is really good. You guys might be onto something with putting fruit on sandwiches. [Just need to do the final test!!] Although, whipped cream makes anything good. Back home, I'd just spray the whole can in my mouth.
[She goes back to arranging her fruit, snorting another surprised laugh at the mental image of him just eating whipped cream out of the can. It's not that she can't relate, but-]
I did that once and it just got all over my face. [Because what mischievous little kid hasn't tried eating whipped cream out of the can?? Maybe it's not the most girlish thing she can say, but who cares about crap like that. She tosses him another smile, expression brightening with the sudden thought.] Hey-hey, why don't we eat these on the roof? You can grab something to drink out of the fridge and we can have a picnic!
[There's milk, mason jars of water with different kinds of fruit, some iced tea, and wine for cooking and/or Dazai in case he decides to stop by whenever.]
[He starts arranging the fruits on his own sandwich as well, mostly copying her, because he likes all the ingredients and might as well have the full Japanese fruit sandwich experience or whatever. Looking at it now, it looks pretty good, or maybe that's the pile of whipped cream that's soaking through the sandwich. This is more of a dessert than lunch, that's for sure.]
Sure, that sounds fun.
[Just chilling at the roof... eating sandwiches. Yeah, that really sounds great. But before they do that, Scott takes hold of the whisk one more time and gathers more of the cream from the bowl.]
And when you mentioned getting the whipped cream on your face... was it a little like this? [With the whisk all prepared, he flicks some of the cream towards her face.]
[It is absolutely a dessert, and she doesn't see a single problem with that! Shinji would get mad that she isn't eating her veggies right now, but she'll just have some later. It's fine.]
Huh?
[She turns toward him when he asks about the whipped cream, a little confused as to what he could possibly need to ask-- only to get smacked in the face! Her yelp of surprise quickly turns into laughter, though, her eyes lighting up.]
Oh, you've done it now-! [and without even hesitating, she flicks the spoon she'd used to spread the whipped cream on her sandwich right back at him. Take that!]
[He half-heartedly complains, any sense of indignation entirely erased by his laughter. He doesn't really care that it's gotten on his shades either, and just flicks the whisk again in retaliation. Is this a waste of perfectly good whipped cream? Probably, but that's far from Scott's mind, especially since Kotone didn't hesitate to get him back.]
Should a member of cooking club be wasting their food?

[His fingers curl into hers as he feels her grip, his eyes darting to their closed hands before looking back up and seeing that grin leveled at him. Don't blush-- be cool, Scott!! Right, what did she just ask him? Toppings, yeah. Weird ones.]
