[She nudges him with her elbow, still pouting a little. What does she have at home that she can give him...? No, that's not right, she can't just improvise a birthday present. It has to be thoughtful! And mean something! Hmmm...
Still, as she leads the way out of the sandwich shop, her pout slowly fades into a smile.] We should have a party! What kind of cake do you like? Maybe I can talk to Yu and we can make karaage or... what do Americans eat for birthday parties?
[He's really not all that bothered if Kotone doesn't give him a present. After all, he sort of just brought it up, and he's pretty happy just spending time with her, so he doesn't need a big party, not right away.
It seems that she's pretty adamant about it though and Scott finds himself smiling slightly despite himself. She's definitely determined in her own Kotone way... but it's for him.]
Uh, I guess chocolate cake? I'm not picky. [Long as it's not something weird!!] Usually it's pizza, easy to order and feeds a bunch of kids at once. That's what my parents usually did.
[Chocolate cake, or chocolate cupcakes... decisions, decisions! But cutting the cake is important, she's pretty sure, instead of just cupcakes. Not that they ever really bothered celebrating birthdays with SEES, but maybe that's what makes this so fun. Plus, he's an American! They make a big deal out of birthdays, don't they?]
I made pizza the other day, too. It's pretty easy! [She hums a little, carrying her sandwich bag in both hands as she skips a little bit ahead of him. Not that she's rushing or anything to get back, but-! The sooner they get back to the farmhouse, the better.] I don't really remember if my parents ever did anything for my birthday. I think we must have...!
[Geez, she's going to handmake everything for him? It's a lot and a part of Scott wants to protest, but she seems pretty happy about doing stuff like this for him, so he stops himself. This is her being normal and everything, and forgetting about the shit that happened in the maze. It's nice. It's what he wanted to do, besides spending genuine time with her.
So, he goes with this.
He smirks, even as she steps ahead of him.]
My favorite pizza topping is pepperoni. [Because he's a basic bitch.
Although he feels a more serious air suddenly develop when she offhandedly mentions her parents.] Are... your parents not around?
[She might handmake everything! Maybe. She likes doing it, but also depending on how many people, that's a lot of pressure to get it right! She'll definitely need to enlist Yu and Akira to help at the very least...
Oooh, pepperoni... she'll remember that. But she blinks a little at the question.]
Huh? Oh, no. They died when I was seven. [As she glances back to him, it's like she doesn't know what expression to make, brows knit and lips twisted into something like sympathy? It's not that she didn't love them, she did! But it's hard to remember anything from around then. It hadn't been until she was a teenager that she even realized the truth about their deaths; that it hadn't been an accident, but Aigis fighting Ryoji ten years before that had caused their deaths. But she just shrugs instead of saying any of that.] What about your family?
[Scott cringes slightly because that came out super bad. Even though Kotone doesn't look bothered or upset by this sudden turn, he can't help but feel a little awkward because bringing up dead parents is not something he intended to do on their date. Good job, Summers!! Is there a way he can rewind time and stop himself from asking that question in the first place?
Nope, so guess he has to deal with this. The teen still looks a little awkward, his smile sort of half-assed as he responds to her.]
My parents? They're around-- they're fine, I guess. [They certainly care about him, but also... he doesn't find himself missing them? He'd rather go back to Xavier's Institute than back home.]
[She certainly doesn't sound too upset about it, but maybe that's because expressing emotions like grief or heartbreak don't always come easily to her. She'd mentioned it offhand to Dazai once that maybe she's broken. --But, that's not exactly date conversation! So she doesn't mention it.]
Yeah? That's good! [Almost everyone in SEES had been part of the dead parents club, so it's really reinforcing her idea that Scott is just a normal, normal guy. Anyway,] Anything else you'd want from a birthday party other than pizza and cake?
[He'll take the out here without hesitation. No talking about dead parents and it doesn't seem like she's interested in hearing about his, which is cool with him. It's not like she'll have to meet them someday for... multiple reasons. He feels himself fiddle with his sandwich bag for a moment, trying to ward off the more depressing feelings that he still gets when thinking about her fate, before smiling at her and shaking his head.
He's fine.]
How about you surprise me? I like surprises. [He kind of actually hates them, but it's cool.]
[She glances back at him, giving him a smile she hopes is encouraging. Death as a topic seems to keep following her recently... but it's almost always her fault for bringing it up. It would be weird to apologize, so she doesn't do that, but... yeah, best to move on.]
Really? Me, too! [Except she's being genuine about liking surprises, giving him a grin and a wink.] I have a few ideas for today already... Race you back?
[Without waiting for an answer, she takes off at a run, laughing the whole time. Can't catch them now, sad thoughts!]
[Maybe a surprise from her wouldn't be so bad though--]
Hey! That's cheating!
[Scott complains half-heartedly, before he breaks into a run as well, laughing as well while doing his best to catch up to her. Is it healthy or weird that they bounce back between feeling depressed and feeling like normal, happy teenagers? He's not going to think about it, just gripping his bag as he slowly starts to catch up to her, hopefully.]
[She laughs aloud and does her best to stay ahead of him. It's been a long time since she's had to climb 200+ flights of stairs and fight Shadows in Tartarus, but after the fight in the desert, she has been running most mornings on the beach to try to get her endurance back up again. Plus, she has Rio's old training guide to follow, so-! At least at the start, she won't go easy on him.]
If you beat me there, maybe I'll give you a special present for your birth~day~ [she calls back over her shoulder, grinning all the while. If the tone shift seems weird, it certainly doesn't seem to affect her. Really, it's kind of normal in her experience-! (Which probably means it's weird.)]
[After this, Scott plans on exercising just a bit more, because he's definitely lagging behind still. H-how does she have this much stamina and energy?! He's not that out of shape, right?? Especially since coming to this world. Maybe if he was motivated somehow--
Wait, a special present?
...Okay, he finds himself moving just a little faster at that comment. W-what kind of special present is she talking about? He thought she didn't have anything planned? Is there something in her room...? Or uh....
His cheeks redden, but also, a rush of adrenaline hits Scott and he's definitely caught up to her now. He just wants to find out what she's talking about!]
[Her laughter rings out, bright and clear as she glances sideways to see him catching up. It's not that she slows down, exactly, but she doesn't make too much of an effort to try to pull ahead, either. Not fighting too hard for a win is part of the present, probably?]
I go running in the mornings on the beach. You should come with me sometime!
[Having a routine can be kind of nice. It helps with getting out of bed in the morning, anyway.
Still, with the farmhouse within view, she tries redoubling her speed, breaking into a sprint. She doesn't intend to win! She just wants to make sure that Scott feels like he actually had to work for it so the victory actually means something.]
You won't find out unless you win~! First to that post!
[She points to the one closest to the stairs to the door. Do your best-!]
[Scott manages to wheeze out through a few pants, not liking the idea of waking up 7am just to go running on the beach. Would he do it for Kotone? ...Maybe, because even for her, the idea is a bit rough. Waking up early is stuff he did back home, not here, and he wants to take full advantage of it.
But as Kotone quickens her pace, so does Scott, not wanting to be outdone and also, really wanting to know what she has in mind. He's definitely feeling his legs protest, but he keeps pushing himself. Sort of easy to push stuff to the back of his mind when he's really focused, he can do it for uncomfortable emotions and he can do it with this.
He feels victory at the tip of his fingertips as he eventually pasts her, but they're not quite at the post yet.]
[Her own breath comes a little short as he pulls ahead of her, a sharp pain in her chest reminding her that oh- yeah. She'd gotten shot back in the maze. Goro had managed to heal her, but she still probably shouldn't be pushing so hard! A hand goes to her chest, but she doesn't stop running, intent on giving him a real challenge. Her plan had been to lose anyway, but at least it'll be a real victory instead of her letting him win at this rate.
[He offhandedly remarks, laughing all the same. Scott hasn't noticed the pain that Kotone is in, otherwise he'd call it off immediately, so he continues with pushing himself to the limit, and gaining ground ahead of her. That feeling of victory is coming closer and closer as he reaches the post...
And he makes it, the mutant grabbing the wood before hunching over, trying to push air back in his lungs and settle his heartrate to a normal pace again. T-that definitely wasn't easy...! As he catches his breath, he flashes a victorious smile at her (unless she's in obvious pain, then she'll get Worried and Fretting Scott.).]
[She'll be fine! She's right on his heels, and when he doubles over, she latches on around his shoulders, laughing between gasps and coughs for air. Whew, okay, she shouldn't have tried for a race, but hopefully he thinks she's just so out of breath because they were just racing, so-!]
You won! [It almost sounds like if she could catch her breath, she'd be cheering for him.] I guess I'll have to give you something special, huh?
[Scott stumbles slightly when Kotone grabs onto his shoulders, but he still manages to stay on his feet as he continues to fight for breath, which is only slightly more difficult between the laughter that's broken out of him. He's not going to complain about having her so close to him, and he turns his head back to her with that same grin from earlier.]
[Another laugh, and she presses a playful kiss to his cheek with a sparkle in her eye.]
I dunno if "maybe" is a promise... [she teases, letting go and hopping a few steps back with pink-flushed cheeks. Their poor sandwiches are probably all shaken apart in their bags by now, but honestly that's the least of her concerns as she laughs again and grabs the post, spinning around it to propel herself up the stairs to the front door two at a time.] But I guess c'mon in!
[Scott meets her flushed look with one of his own, clearly affected by the small kiss she placed on him just now. It's just a cheek kiss, but it doesn't help with calming his heartrate, feeling it spike again just now. I-it's kind of embarrassing...! They've hugged and were really close to each other during the maze, but his face still turns red from such innocent gestures...
Why isn't he cooler??
But Scott doesn't have long to really question his coolness, following her up the stairs with a wide grin.]
[Fired back over her shoulder with a grin and another laugh, clearly teasing him as she bounds her way up the stairs and turns the corner down the hallway to her room. It's neater than she's ever seen Scott's -- her dirty clothes are piled in a basket near her dresser, and she slips her shoes off in the doorway to set them beside the naginata leaning against the wall near her desk. The only decorations are the various plants and flowers she'd gotten from Astralin, as well as a little statue of a dog that looks like it was made of glass (but is actually magic ice). One framed photograph stands out as the only picture in the room, positioned so that it's one of the first things she sees when she wakes up. Her desk and dresser are a little cluttered, but overall it seems pretty clean!
Most things in her room are pink, though, matching the color of her cheeks as she crosses the room and sets her bagged sandwich down on the dresser nearby before plopping unceremoniously down on her bed. It's quiet up here, away from the bustle of town and with only the occasional sound of the animals able to be heard through the open windows. She can't help but feel certain that he can hear the rapid beat of her heart even from across the room. It's still a little tough to catch her breath, but she grins at him anyway, patting the bed beside her.]
You're the only boy who doesn't live here who's been in my room, you know. You're pretty lucky!
[Ken and Shinji don't and didn't count, respectively -- SEES members are different. And while it's not a big deal for her to invite boys to her room, it seems like the kind of thing that might make Scott happy to hear? She guesses, anyway.]
What'd you think? [And yet, she is not above fishing for compliments.]
[He shouts, probably just a little too loudly and slightly indignant, because he has to make that super clear to everyone around him, which is only him and Kotone. Not that liking dudes is weird or anything, but uh..... yeah. Conversation for another day or never sounds great.
But as he steps into her room, he takes a very unsubtle look around, his head turning to take in the decorations and flowers that makes her space really Kotone. He walks a couple of steps inside, before noticing that she's taken off her shoes, and yanking off his own. It's definitely clean in here and he probably doesn't want to get things dirty! The photograph catches his attention the most, however, and Scott finds himself looking at it before turning his focus back on her.
Uh, don't mind him being nosy and everything...
However, he walks over to her, plopping his sandwich bag down next to hers, and taking a seat on the bed.]
R-really? I'm the first one? [Okay yeah, his face is definitely turning red. I-it's nothing, Summers, she's just making an observation. S-she probably doesn't mean anything else. Take a deep breath, play it cool, and just... be yourself. Right, great, he sounds like something out of a stupid self-help book.]
Huh? Oh, your room? [He takes another look around, before smiling at her, finding that teasing Kotone helps with settling his own nerves.] It's okay, I guess.
[She watches him surveying her room, an unmistakable fondness to her smile when he pauses at the sight of the photograph. If he asks, she'll tell him about the people in it, and the party they had -- notably missing from said photo is Shinjiro, but after the maze, Scott should be able to guess why.
The fondness doesn't fade as she glances back to him when he sits beside her, even if her smile turns the slightest bit impish at his flush. For the sake of his pride, she'll just nod. Yep! First boy in her room. Usually she's the one doing the visiting.
Then she shoves him lightly with a mock-offended gasp.]
You guess? [she protests, though she can't quite muffle her laughter as she shoves him again for good measure.] I can kick over my laundry basket if that'll make you feel more at home!
[Scott protests lightly, before bumping his shoulder into hers in a playful manner as he finds himself completely at ease with her once more. A part of him is still a little excited and everything to be in her room, but it's so easy to just fall into something lighthearted between them. She's made him feel more comfortable about... a lot of things since they met, and Scott hopes that he's done the same, at least in some way.
He's feeling a little more confident about that since the maze, but also, he doesn't want to bring that up. It's all about being normal and having fun like regular teenagers, right? They can't predict what tomorrow may bring, but that's true for any world, not just this one.]
Oh hey, um, I wanted to give you something for a while now.
[Isn't she going to give him a gift? Maybe, and he'll pester her about it in a bit, but Scott's been delaying this for a while now, and he can almost feel Mitama staring at him from wherever she's at as he pulls a seashell necklace from his pocket. How it didn't get smashed or anything during their run is anyone's guess, but he holds it out for her to take.]
Uh.
[He had a speech and everything, but he finds himself stuttering for a second, before somehow gaining the courage to speak.] It's okay if you don't like it, but... I wanted to you have this.
[It's kind of funny how easy it is to relax around him. Maybe it's because, unlike with everyone in SEES, he doesn't have any expectations of her. Or well, he does, but not the kind like her team had. She doesn't have to be anyone specific for him -- a leader, a guide, an assistant, a confidant. She can just be herself, whoever that is.]
Huh? It's not my birthday! [she protests, and yet, she still takes it when he holds it out. It's a necklace-! For a long moment, she just stares down at it, running her thumb over the shell as he speaks. It's such a little thing, but like Aigis' charred screw, Shinjiro's watch, or the small assortment of keys, it's still something Scott wanted her to have specifically. That makes it special, her heart thudding almost painfully in her chest as she gazes up at him and closes her fist around it.]
I love it, [she says quietly, her smile small, but bright and genuine as she offers it back to him.] Can you put it on for me?
[And she turns a bit to make it easier for him to get at the back of her neck. Don't fumble it now!]

[She nudges him with her elbow, still pouting a little. What does she have at home that she can give him...? No, that's not right, she can't just improvise a birthday present. It has to be thoughtful! And mean something! Hmmm...
